Disk Arrays

Large Disk Arrays

Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, missions need mega amounts of disk, usually for audio or video storage purposes. Eg 5TB (someone in the future will laugh that that is considered big!). BIG disk arrays are not cheap, although not as expensive as they used to be.

So what is the most cost effective option:

  1. An external disk array with built in controller SCSIS/SATA or Fibre Channel, or
  2. Internal Disk array in a large PC case using SATA disks.

Linux Solutions

We are interested in only Linux solutions, because there are no licensing problems.

Care needs to be taken with SATA controllers, most of them are fakeraid.

NOTE: In writing this we have been primarily interested in capacity & reliability, not performance.
